Map

Map is Chippery's code indexing system. It automatically indexes your codebase so you can use /chippery-orient and /chippery-func for fast, token-efficient navigation.

Automatic Indexing

The index builds automatically when you:

  • Start Chippery in a project for the first time
  • Start a Claude Code session in a git repository

You'll see a message like:

Chippery: Building code index in background...

Once complete, the navigation tools become available.

Commands

In Chippery

CommandDescription
/mapShow index status
/map-rebuildRebuild the full index
/map-clearClear the index
/map-add <file>Add a specific file to the index

In Claude Code

CommandDescription
/chippery-indexRebuild the code index

When to Rebuild

You usually don't need to manually rebuild. The index updates automatically. But you might want to rebuild if:

  • You made major changes (added many files, large refactoring)
  • /chippery-func returns stale or missing results
  • You want to force an immediate update instead of waiting

To rebuild:

In Chippery:

/map-rebuild

In Claude Code:

/chippery-index

Clearing the Index

If you need to start fresh:

In Chippery:

/map-clear
/map-rebuild

Or delete the folder:

bash
rm -rf .chippery

The index will rebuild on the next session.

Index Status

Check if the index is ready:

/map

This shows:

  • Whether the index exists
  • Number of indexed files
  • Last update time

Supported Languages

The indexer supports:

  • TypeScript / JavaScript
  • Python
  • Go
  • Rust
  • Java / Kotlin
  • C / C++
  • Ruby
  • PHP
  • And more...

Storage

The index is stored in .chippery/index/ in your project root. You can add this to .gitignore if you prefer not to commit it.
